LG has started shipping its first Smart TV with webOS platform this year, bringing a relatively easy way to stream content from the web on a TV. Now LG has announced that webOS 2.0 will push its Smart TV next year.
The company plans to start showing the latest webOS platform at the Consumer Electronics Show in January in Las Vegas.
LG has acquired webOS HP (which was acquired by buying Palm). Although the operating system was originally designed for smartphones and tablets, LG has developed a user-friendly interface for TVs, and a modified version of webOS so it can be used to push on large web applications screens.
The company sold more than 5 million television sets with webOS last year, but some wondered if the experience was really good. It is possible that LG would have sold these televisions whether or not webOS, while many developers working on the platform left LG.
However, LG plans to go further with its platform, and promises that version 2.0 offers a number of improvements and new features such as:
reduced boot times up to 60%
faster loading time up to 70% when moving from the home screen to YouTube or other applications
