BQ Ubuntu Phone is now available for anyone

The Spanish manufacturer BQ began selling a smartphone running the brand new operating system from Canonical, Ubuntu Touch, earlier this year. But at the time, it was only available in limited number by brief "flash sales". Sadness for all lovers of the OS based on Linux.

Now anyone can buy a smartphone BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition . Or at least, everyone being in the European Union. Good news for all residents in the so hexagon. The smartphone is available at a price of 169.90 euros .

Unsurprisingly for a smartphone at this price, the Aquaris E4.5 is not exactly a premium device. It has a 4.5 inch screen with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels, a quad-core Cortex-A7, Mediatek MT6582 it, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage.

It loads a battery of 2150 mAh, a rear 8-megapixel camera, a front camera of 5 megapixels, a micro-SD card slot, and supports Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.0, 3G and HSPA + networks .

But its appeal is not in the hardware. Indeed, it is more about the software part, since it is the first widely available smartphone to run the Ubuntu operating system from Canonical, which has been optimized for smartphones and tablets.

Early reviews have been somewhat mixed. Ubuntu fans seem to like it, while others state that it is an interesting platform, but that is not yet ready for prime time.

Yet it is one of the best solutions on the market today to try mobile-friendly version of Ubuntu Canonical , without installing it by yourself on a Nexus smartphone or other device. Highlights include interactions that are only at the edges of the smartphone, avoiding the use of buttons. In addition, we will find the "Scopes" to present content from multiple sources into a single page. Despite the support for Web applications, the selection of applications for Ubuntu is still quite low compared to that for Android or iOS.
