Samsung unveils SSD 16TB

There a few years it was difficult to find solid state drives that could contain more than a few hundred gigabytes. Now Samsung has a new SSD which can hold up to 16 terabytes . Although technically it has only 15.36 To, Samsung presents it as "16 TB". But even so, it's really the hard drive that has the largest capacity in the world.

The PM1633a is a 2.5 inch hard drive, designed for professionals, which should be marketed at a fairly high price. But the technology used in this record could change the face of the market, and reduce costs for smaller models.

The new Samsung discs hold twice as much data as the larger 2.5-inch hard drives on the market, and much more than most SSDs.

Thank you to the NAND flash memory-V
What makes this smallest possible technological feat is related to mass production for the third generation of NAND flash memory-V (256GB NAND 3D) . To do this, we will find 48 layers of multi-level cell (MLC) of 3 bits, thus offering 32GB of storage capacity on a single chip, inside the huge SSD. It is also for this reason that the disc is twice as thick as 2.5 inch standard hard drives found in laptops.

Samsung has not yet revealed its availability or price, but no doubt the PM1633a be reserved for a select group of people. After all, at its commercial demo, the company has installed 48 of these new SSD in a server or an available storage 768 TB. There is probably not a consumer on earth who is ready to pay the price of a car to a hard drive, since ' it is expected to cost nearly 5,000 dollars.

Samsung is not the only company working on high-capacity SSD. Toshiba and SanDisk recently announced their intention to offer their own NAND flash memory 256 Gb in 2016. And the new technology from Intel and Micron called 3D Xpoint could relegate NAND technology into the background. It could be up to 1000 times faster than the NAND.
