Microsoft revealed the AIX project, an open source platform designed to test and help develop artificial intelligence (AI) using Minecraft . It is currently in closed beta, but should be made available this summer to the public.

When Microsoft bought Mojang, you've probably wondered what the Redmond company was going to do with Minecraft. And, you probably have not thought that use of the popular game "sandbox" would form artificial intelligence routines.
The idea is based on the fact that the Minecraft game is a learning process, and as a human being must become familiar with the nuances of the game when they sit in front of him and play, an artificial intelligence can learn from the epic game blocks of Mojang.
As the Microsoft noted in a blog post, artificial intelligence will start knowing nothing of its environment or goals in the game, and must advance working . The AI should learn about climbing hills, avoid washing in Ecore on the importance of light and darkness, and finally understand the rewards and objectives, while using the same methods and resources that 'a human.
In other words, we do not speak of having an artificial intelligence that may be able to demonstrate that it can play a famous game, but it can actually learn to play the game. Or, as Fernando Diaz, principal investigator on the project said, "we are trying to learn the program, as opposed to programming that is able to perform specific tasks" .
The collaboration
Minecraft was chosen as an ideal way to help test and develop artificial intelligence because it is a game with vast worlds, with a range of possible actions and complex decisions. The collaborative side of the game is also a major asset since we want to experience how the AI could work together - or with humans.
And of course, test the artificial intelligence in a game with obvious benefits in terms of cost efficiency. If you build a robot in the real world who must climb a hill, and he made a mistake, falls and breaks, the repair will be expensive. Whereas crash in artificial intelligence within a virtual world not cost you anything, it's good to choose this option.
It is hoped that the AIX project will help improve the development of computers in "general intelligence" . As for the AIX platform itself, it consists of a Minecraft mod that allows agents of AI to detect and take action within the game environment. It can run on Windows, OS X or Linux.
