Smart glasses to allow the blind to see the world

Here is a very promising project of glasses that allow blind people (not completely) can 'see' the world.

We believe, wrongly, that when we speak of blindness, only the totally blind people are concerned. However, there are many individuals who are blind but still have some vision, although too low to get into the category of "visually impaired." The blind is not necessarily someone who has no visual perception and it is precisely these people, located between the visually impaired and blind in the strict sense, the next technology will address. Although lenses and glasses were never able to help them regain sight, this is a pair of smartglasses that could bring the solution.

The world and its contours

This equipment will use a camera connected to a computer processor. The camera will capture video that the wearer looks, the retrieved images are then processed to display results that take into account the contours. The user can therefore see that the world consists of contours, but allow it in some ways to regain sight . Two interesting points to note. More an object will be closer, its contours will be bright, which will capture the distance. When the wearer of these glasses will discuss with someone close enough, the system should be able to provide information on the face of the speaker through facial recognition. Warning, this device is very promising but it will not make the private view of all blind visual capabilities.

Compact and accessible

At the moment, the technology is only in testing phase. But these are rather inconclusive: the glasses are simple to use and testers fired real benefits. One of was even moved by seeing his guide dog for the first time. These smart glasses still have a large size, which makes them impractical. However, researchers from the University of Oxford working on the project have assured that they arrive to reduce the size to make them look like classic sunglasses. Other (very) good news: the technology is affordable because researchers hope to sell at the price of a smartphone. These great smartglasses could be a very positive contribution to the lives of people who can not see but are not provided with total blindness, a much more promising project that Google Glass !
