Canonical releases new versions of Ubuntu every six months, so that the changes are not always as drastic as what you would see in the updates for other operating systems. But while Ubuntu 14.04 is a version supporting long-term stability-oriented, Ubuntu 14.10 offers for its some bug fixes, some new features and updated applications.
Among other things , Ubuntu 14.10 includes a new version of the Linux kernel with improved support for Intel Broadwell and processor support that graphics chips from NVIDIA and AMD. It should support future Intel SoC Cherryview.
The operating system should also offer new versions of its internal applications, such as Firefox, Thunderbird and LibreOffice.
The main branch of Ubuntu with the Unity desktop environment seems almost identical to that of Ubuntu 14.04. There was no visual changes ... not even a new default wallpaper. However, Unity 7 has received a number of bug fixes and minor improvements, and most notably linked to the support of the HiDPI mode. You can view the full changelog Unity 7 from this link .
If you are not a fan of Unity experience, you can also download the latest beta versions of Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME, Xubuntu, or whatnot with which you're familiar.
Before downloading, be sure that Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn is in beta, so you may have problems ! That said, I tested Ubuntu 14.10 for the entire weekend, and I must admit that it is quite stable and robust and I have not encountered major problems.
