HP will stop its cloud services and App Catalog for webOS

If you still have a Palm Pre or an HP TouchPad running webOS , smartphone or tablet could become much less useful in January. Three years after the closure of the webOS hardware division, HP will stop cloud services for webOS.

This means that the HP App Catalog disappear , taking with him the impossibility of recovering a lost password, to access cloud services for configuring new devices, or to save or restore a device from the cloud .

Cloud services will still be available until January 2015 , so if you want to re-download an application, restore your device, or activate a webOS device, it will be concerned prior to fermture. On the other hand, it has been years that HP has updated its webOS operating system for its smartphones or tablets, so you'd better move to another platform. If you do not want to buy a new device, you can still install Android on the HP TouchPad.

HP has spent more than a billion dollars to acquire Palm there a few years to get their hands on the webOS software business. But sales were sluggish, and HP has halted all its efforts on webOS devices, and two months after the launch of the HP TouchPad.

LG ended up acquiring much of what remained of the webOS team, and launched a series of Smart TV built around a new version of webOS. LG plans to release smartwatches also powered by webOS in the future.

Meanwhile, the original source code of webOS has been converted into an open source project, and there is a small team even created a new branch named LuneOS, which proves to be an operating system that could revive webOS on smartphones and tablets.

While many features found on modern smartphones such as managing multitasking and universal search were already present in early versions of webOS, and long before they find their way on other operating systems. But these days most of what webOS and remain LuneOS bring nostalgia ...

There is still an independent community of users and hackers who came with their own methods to do some of the things that HP has webOS as backup and restore your device.
