Today simply download and install Google Chrome 38 and connect to your Netflix account . You will need to download the browser from the site google.com/chrome . The open source Chromium browser will not work.

Since Chrome 38 offers an integrated HTML5 for video playback with DRM support, Netflix removed the restrictions that had previously prevented users to read streaming content if they were using a browser on Linux.

Until recently, Netflix has used Microsoft Silverlight technology to stream video to web browsers - and Silverlight is not officially available for Linux. But the company used HTML5 technology for streaming video on some platforms for some time, and today the HTML5 player works fine in Chrome for Linux.

We could possibly see Netflix support for Linux browsers besides Google Chrome . But they will need to incorporate before the same kind support DRM for this to work. Mozilla is already working to bring similar functionality to future versions of Firefox.

So if you are first on Linux because you believe in the ideals of free software, Netflix may not be the perfect solution for video streaming.
