The Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi sells its smartphones and other devices in a handful of markets. But these markets offer a pool of unmatched population, such as China and India. So even if you can not easily buy a Xiaomi smartphone in Europe or the US, we should not be surprised that the company runs a large number of smartphones.
In fact, Xiaomi has sold nearly 18 million smartphones in the third quarter of 2014 . These figures, impressive as they are, have allowed the Chinese company to become the third largest smartphone company in the world. Only Samsung and Apple managed to sell more smartphones during the same period.
Strategy Analytics and IDC also reported that sales in general have increased over 25% in the third quarter of 2014 . In other words, Xiaomi did not take a small piece of the market share, she grabbed a large piece of a growing market.
It is interesting to note that the race for 3rd place in the smartphone market is quite fierce: LG, Huawei and Xiaomi were all between 5 and 6% market share . Of course, we are still far from market leaders such as Apple and Samsung, which have about 12% and 25% market share.
