Firefox OS: Mozilla ready to arrive in the connected objects

Firefox OS Mozilla is an operating system built around the same technology used in the Firefox web browser. It is based on open source software, and is designed to assist anyone to create third party applications using Web tools like HTML5. Mozilla plans to put some obstacles in the way of Apple or Google in launching a version of Firefox OS for mobile devices.

Currently, the two largest players in the mobile OS market are iOS and Android Wear . Unfortunately, they can only interact respectively with the iPhone and Android devices.

Mozilla has already shown that he is not content to merely develop applications for desktops with Firefox OS, including by implementing it in smartphones "low cost" and in the 4K TVs Panasonic later the year.

Joe Cheng, product manager for Mozilla's mobile division, said it was time that the scope of the OS to be extended, which means that the open-source platform could arrive on the scene of connected objects ( wearables ). "We want to break the single-brand barrier" Cheng said during a presentation at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show. "We want to ensure that what we build is good for the user, instead of just being another product on the market " , he continues.

The ultimate goal for Firefox OS is that it will become the primary operating system for all mobile, connected objects and other smart devices, allowing for quick and easy communication between multiple devices, regardless of size . The presentation of Cheng at the Consumer Electronics Show focused on the ability to connect with a multitude of intelligent appliances, washing machines to smartwatches, touching on the expected growth of the Internet of Things (IoT).

Firefox OS could experience a success, at least initially, with Chinese manufacturers can build on it, because the operating system is already used in low cost smartphones in a number of Asian markets. For the moment there is no word on when the OS will be available on a connected object, but Mozilla is in talks with several interested parties .

However, it is clear that Mozilla does its best to make Firefox OS to reach a market share of capacity where it will compete with Android and iOS. On mobile, the operating system has been criticized for its lack of speed, but if this can be rectified, its open-source technologies could be of interest to manufacturers of connected objects.

Mozilla is not the only company with the hope to get in on the market for portable devices. In fact, if Apple is ready to launch its own smartwatch, and many manufacturers have bet on Android Wear, Samsung has its own operating system based on Tizen for wearables . And last week, we learned that LG was working on smartwatches with webOS.
