The new strategy for Mozilla Firefox OS will be based on quality and experience advantage.
In 2013, Mozilla launched its mobile operating system Firefox OS . Faced with competition from Android and iOS, Mozilla heard to get a place in the entry-level segment, through mobile manufactured by partners with modest characteristics and therefore too expensive.
But today, Mozilla seems to be confronted with the harsh reality. By itself, the low-cost prices is not enough to conquer the markets. Therefore, if you believe an email to the CEO of the foundation that was obtained by CNET, it decided to change its strategy for its mobile operating system.
The smartphone at $ 25, it's over
In 2014, Mozilla unveiled a project whose objective is the arrival on the smartphone market with Firefox OS to $ 25.
At the time, the project had the buzz. But a year later, it was abandoned. Indeed, according to the emails, the CEO would have recognized that they have not "seen enough traction for the phone to $ 25" . And because of this, the project will be aborted.
But it is not only question of this draft ultra low-cost smartphones. This is Mozilla's strategy for its OS, which, it seems, has been revised. If once they gave the goal of having affordable mobile, the idea now is to focus more on quality. "We will make phones and connected devices that people will want to buy because of the experience and not just price " , it said. For now, the technical details are however not yet known.
A support Android
If the Mozilla browser is now one of the most used, this is not the case of Firefox OS in the mobile market, which is far behind Android and iOS. But Mozilla, although realistic, still intends to find a place and in order to attract users, it could increase the amount of content available to them via the Android apps to support ( a strategy to BlackBerry ) in addition to native web apps.
In any case, it is also revealed by the email published by CNET: "we will explore the implementation of the Android application compatibility."
