Now you can buy a Panasonic Smart TV with Firefox OS

Panasonic is the first TV maker to use the operating system Firefox OS Mozilla to power its own Smart TV (connected TV). And now you can buy one of these TVs, at least on the European continent.

They should be available in other markets in a few months. The Panasonic CR850, CR730, CX800, CX750, CX700 and CX680 all use the Mozilla OS to power the smart TV experience.

As its name suggests, Firefox OS is an operating system designed around the Firefox Web browser - that means it can run applications built with web technologies such as HTML5 and JavaScript. The operating system was originally developed for smartphones and tablets, but Mozilla and Panasonic have also a version designed to run on big screen TVs.

A dedicated interface for TVs
The user interface reserved for TVs do not look like a Web browser or a smartphone interface. Instead, it uses an arrangement of cards to help you navigate across applications, devices, live television and other features .

There are already applications available for a number of popular Internet video services such as Netflix, Hulu and YouTube. But being based on HTML5 technology, this should facilitate the work of Web application developers to push their services on Firefox OS. Nevertheless, there is still a question mark on the number of applications that will arrive at the store, especially when we know that there are a multitude of similar platforms like Android TV, Roku, or the Tizen Apple TV.

While big names like Netflix will probably do their best to offer applications for each platform, do not be surprised if some other suppliers wait before deciding what platforms are popular enough to set their priority.
