This customized version of Android was developed by the Chinese startup Jide, a company founded by former Google employees. Earlier this year, they launched a named Remix Ultra tablet that is much like a Microsoft Surface. But what really makes it special is that it was the first device to have Remix OS, a version of Android with a taskbar, and offering support for running multiple applications in multi-window mode, and a number of other features unique to the OS.
More recently, the company launched a Kickstarter campaign for a mini desktop PC called the Mini Remix . The goal was to collect 50,000 dollars a crowdfunding campaign. After only a few weeks, the Remix Mini has already collected more than a million dollars on Kickstarter.
An enticing business model!
The tablet Remix Ultra has also appeared on Kickstarter before its official launch. But this project has raised 210 000 dollars from 1,278 backers, while the Mini Remix collected much more money from 14,000 backers. And there are still 18 days before the Kickstarter campaign ends.
So why this new model has much more success? People are more interested in a computer running an Android tablet with a keyboard? Perhaps. However, the price probably plays a major role.
Jide has offered a limited number of tablets of 39 dollars or 199 dollars. But, once exhausted all promotions, the price rose to 349 dollars. As for the first backers of the campaign Remix Mini, they were able to get their hands on Remix Mini PC for about twenty dollars. Obviously, this price is now the past and exhausted, but you can always buy a Mini Remix for less than 30 dollars, or 40 dollars or more for a model with better specs.
An OS that keeps getting better
Want to try Remix OS on a tablet that you may already own? The company has released a ROM for the Google Nexus 10 in July, and last week, the company released a ROM for the Nexus 9.
